Punta Cana is a major tourist destination in Dominican Republic, which attracts thousands of visitors each year from across the world due to its natural beauty and its spectacular beaches. The history of Punta Cana is quite interesting, and not many people are aware of it yet. A group of American investors had bought an area of 48 sq km of pure jungle in Dominican Republic in 1969. This patch of land had some of the most exotic beaches, but it was overgrown with jungle and had almost no road access.
Shortly after the purchase a Dominican businessman joined the group and had an idea to develop the piece of land as a tourist destination. A small part of that land was then developed to accommodate a small hotel with a few cabins and rooms, a small village for the employees working there to stay and a rickety airstrip for aircrafts. At its full capacity the hotel could accommodate a maximum of 40 people and soon enough another hotel was opened here which could accommodate as many as 350 people.
It was only in the 1980s that proper roads were built in the area and the international airport was built. Several other resorts and hotels had started cropping up in that area in the mean time. Ever since 1984, with the inauguration of the international airport, other groups and investors began purchasing land from the original Punta Cana Group for building their own resorts and hotels. Today there are several resorts in the location that provide Punta Cana All Inclusive holidays and offers to tourists from around the world.
It should be noted that Punta Cana has been built and maintained by a private group with almost no support from the government of Dominican Republic. All the basic requirements in the area like proper roads, street lights, water facilities, schools, sewage disposal etc. have been handled and taken care of by the Punta Cana Group on its own.
The members of the Punta Cana Group at present are four individuals including Oscar de la Renta. What make Punta Cana so popular among the tourists are its isolated location and its immense natural beauty. Punta Cana has plenty of exotic beaches, all of them with fine white sand and lined with coconut trees. The waters are perfectly crystal clear and the weather makes it enjoyable to just sit and relax in the sun or to swim and snorkel.
